Gill McCombs is a former academic librarian with a new love for creating visually; originally from England she now lives in Ranchos de Taos. Her piece explores the contradiction of pandemic life in Northern NM: “you can live a life of comfort and ease, surrounded by nature’s bounty and beauty, almost forgetting you are in a pandemic, until you try to go outside and engage in all the rites and rituals of normal daily life…the home, for all its softness, is in fact a sterile prison.”

Geneviève de Vellis ~ NeoRio HOME Featured Artist

Geneviève de Vellis is a long time Taos resident and has been creating art since as long as she can remember. For her much of “Home” has been about her children who have just left home and reflecting on this “has brought me to a place of wonderment about what the present and future will be about.”

Field Institute of Taos: After School and Nature Art Groups ~ NeoRio HOME Featured Artists

This piece was created by a group of five kids who love the mountains and who’ve been making nature based artwork under the guidance of Malia Reeves, through Field Institute of Taos. They see planet Earth, the mountains and the forest as home. They chose to show a camping scene “because that is what we think of as a group when we think of Home.”

This piece was created by a group of second and third graders, who were attending an outdoors after school program with the Field Institute of Taos, a local nonprofit organization, encouraging youth and community members to get outside since 1996. Program instructor, Cass Landrum reflects, “the true beauty of this project was the process of seven different, young children working together to build something for their new friend, Fred (a stuffed Pika).”

Diane de Fremery is a life-long artist; originally from California she now lives north of Questa, NM. Her piece reflects her search for beauty, inspiration and meaning in the midst of the intense stress and tragedy of the pandemic – “an assemblage of collected items that were either sent to me for inspiration or gathered by me during these stressful times.”

David Vargo, originally from Cleveland Ohio, has lived in Lama, New Mexico since 2000. His piece explores the wholesomeness and beauty of home and also the pain and confusion when one’s private space is violated – “the antithesis of home.”

Crystal and Ariessa Medina created their cube artwork as a mother-daughter team. Crystal (mother) is a Salon owner, Ariessa (daughter) is in the medical field working toward a nursing degree. Their piece reflects on 2020 as “a year of awakening” and how they “survived locked in the box this year has given us” by leaning “toward the simplicity of home.”

Connie Long is a builder of home and family and wood toymaker living and working north of Questa, NM. Her piece represents an Air B&B for migrating birds and the “uplift” that she’s felt by providing for, observing and learning about the incredible qualities and human advocates of “these feathered wonders.”

Cathy Hope is a life-long artist, whose primary medium has been aroma; she lives north of Questa. Her piece pays homage to the many birds that have made their nests on her property for over thirty years alongside her own parallel habitation of her land and home.
