After a bit longer transit time than projected, the cubes arrived! (Click on images below for larger view.)

Questa Lumber and Hardware generously donated their commercial location to receive the freight delivery and fork lift to load the palette of cubes onto our trailer. We drove the cubes out to our home in Sunshine Valley through a much-needed drizzle. All 100 cubes arrived intact, well-made and ready to be transformed into your home creations! Thank you H.A. Stiles for making the cubes and Questa Lumber for helping to make this project possible! Now it’s time for the cubes to complete their journey to you!

Here are the pick up locations and details on how to get your cube:

  • Questa Visitor Center: open Wednesday – Sunday, 10 am – 3 pm through September 13. After that, Thursdays, 10 – 3 pm.
  • Taos Public Library at the front of the Building, self-serve, weather permitting: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 – 4 pm.
  • For those who live further away or picking up a cube is prohibitive, we can mail one to you or arrange delivery.

Get in touch if you have questions or need to make special arrangements to get a cube: emailforleap@gmail.com or 575-224-9066.

REMINDER: Submission deadline for the online exhibition is September 26. All the details on how to participate are HERE.

We cannot wait to see what you create with your cube!

Participate in NeoRio 2020: Home!

August 21, 2020

You’re invited to be an artist for this year’s NeoRio!

Since 2009, NeoRio has been a venue for innovative art, experimental thinking, education, and exchange. It has been a public gathering and celebration. NeoRio 2020 must respect the current, heightened safety measures while at the same time creatively respond to these extraordinary times. Affirming that we each have a unique experience of the world and something valuable to express, EVERYONE is invited to create and reflect upon the theme of home during the global pandemic. This year we’re inviting you to be the artists for NeoRio 2020…from your home!

Pondering Home
What does home mean to you? Think inside and outside the box! Approach the theme of home with the broadest perspective: body as home, garden as home, kitchen as home, family as home, traditions as home, Earth as home, home during the pandemic, home as refuge, safety, confinement….?

Starting Point: The Cube
All participants will be provided with the same starting point: a 7x7x7” wooden box, specially made for this year’s NeoRio project.
Think of the cube as a raw material to work with; to be added to, subtracted from, or modified in any way you like. The cube could be carved, collaged, painted, drawn or written on, covered, attached to, drilled, inlaid, quilted or…..destroyed? (Just document the process!) Take the cube and the theme of home and follow wherever they lead you.

How to get your cube

  • Questa Visitor Center: open Wednesday – Sunday, 10 am – 3 pm through September 13. After that, cubes will be available for pick-up on Thursdays, 10 – 3 pm.
  • Taos Public Library at the front of the Building, self-serve and weather permitting: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 – 4 pm.
  • For those who live further away or picking up a cube is prohibitive, we can mail one to you.

Short Audio Reflection
Reflection helps us to make sense of and glean meaning from challenging times. Sharing stories connects us with one another and is an opportunity to be vulnerable and courageous. There is power in oral tradition; hearing a person’s story in his or her own voice deepens its significance and impact. Current circumstances show us more than ever that connection adds purpose to life. With this in mind, we again invite you to reflect on the expansive theme of home and express yourself in a brief audio story. (A smartphone can be used to record your story or we are happy to record it for you over the phone.)

Exhibition and Archive
We foresee a poignant outcome with the combination of unique cube artworks and audio stories. These will be shown in the online exhibition, Home: Thinking Inside and Outside the Box” which will go live October 8. Friday, September 26 is the deadline for receiving digital documentation (artwork and story) for participation in the virtual art show. Find full guidelines on how to participate HERE. On October 9 and 10, we kick-off a dynamic series of NeoRio 2020: Home interactive, community roundtables on Zoom, during which artworks and stories will be shared. All are invited!

We welcome the continued submission of home cube artworks and stories throughout the fall. These will be included in the NeoRio 2020: Home archive. The online home story-sharing events and archive is a collaboration with Questa Stories ~ Community Memory Project.

Helping Others Participate
Are you a teacher? Do you know people who might want to make a cube artwork and submit a story? We would love your help involving others in this project!

Summary – How to Participate:

  1. Pick up your cube at the Questa VC or Taos Library
  2. Create a home cube artwork
  3. Take photos of your creation
  4. Record a short audio story
  5. Email them to emailforleap@gmail.com

NeoRio is free and open to all; donations are appreciated. NeoRio is made possible by individual donations, local business and media sponsorships as well as grant support. This project is supported in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts and Taos Community Foundation with additional sponsorships from Questa economic Development Fund, Questa del Rio Colorado News, Questa Visitor Center, Taos Public Library Zia Event Design, North Star Toys, Questa Lumber and Hardware, and generous individual donors and volunteers.

NeoRio 2020: Home – A little preview

July 19, 2020

September 19 – October 25, 2020

We’re transforming and adapting NeoRio 2020 in response to heightened safety measures, while recognizing our need for personal connection and support. An invitation is extended to everyone to consider their experience of “home” during the global pandemic. Participants will create artwork-time capsules with an accompanying audio story to be shared and archived digitally in collaboration with Questa Stories ~ Community Memory Project.  Artwork-time capsules by the public as well as local and regional artists will be shown and shared via an online exhibition and digital archive, through a series of community round tables on Zoom, and in local street front windows. Additional collaborations are also in the works.

Let’s come together and reflect on this poignant time. You are invited to participate!

Reflection, Response and Transformation: NeoRio 2020

July 10, 2020

From the archives: First NeoRio Event, Evening around the Campfire, 2009

An update from Claire Coté

Everyone and everything is shifting. Haltings we did not think possible have occurred. Countless closures and migrations to online platforms are taking place. We are all affected.

As the director of LEAP (Land, Experience and Art of Place) and curator of its NeoRio event, I am faced with the challenge of reinventing this multi-faceted, outdoor environmental art event and adapting it to present circumstances.

NeoRio* is a venue for innovative art, experimental thinking, education and exchange. For the past eleven years, artists, participants and collaborators have enjoyed thought-provoking art installations at Wild Rivers on the rim of the Rio Grande gorge, along with a farm-to-table feast, music, poetry and artist talks at sunset. Each year, we’ve tried to create a kind of alchemy with this confluence of art, environment, community, and celebration of each year’s fascinating theme. Now things must change.

We are in the process of rethinking and evolving the event, developing new and deepening existing collaborations, while also holding true to the core values of the event: connection to each other, land, water, culture, and place.

As this process of reinvention unfolds, I find the journey guided by curiosity. Questions are surfacing, some of them general, and applicable to much of life now: What opportunities are present in this time of uncertainty and how can we cultivate them? How do we remain strong, present and healthy and allow this challenging time to propel growth and positive change? How can we experience community and connection without being physically together?

Others are very specific to the NeoRio event: No outdoor venue? No in-person art installations? No community feast? How can NeoRio best serve people and place?

Each year, NeoRio features a different theme. Themes of past years have included Wilderness, Light, Seeds, Pollination, Roots, Elements and more. Selecting each year’s theme is a challenging, but also rich and interesting process. The theme for NeoRio this year was decided in February but it’s deeper relevance and timeliness became apparent a month later, as New Mexico and much of the United States and the world began to shut down and many of us began to “shelter in place.” The theme for NeoRio 2020 is “Home.”

I don’t know what the future has in store for us. I do know that “leaning into” the challenges we’re facing is the right thing to do.

As September 19, the original event date approaches, look for updates about how to participate in NeoRio 2020: Home. We want you to be a part of it!

Have ideas? Want to know more or make a donation? Follow updates HERE or give me a call 575-224-9066!

*NeoRio began in partnership with Bureau of Land Management’s Taos Field Office, as a public lands day event and has evolved in collaboration with local nonprofits, Localogy and Questa Creative Council. It is the result of many collaborations with a variety of artists, mentors, organizations and many generous volunteers, funders and sponsors.

Exploring Universal Elements at NeoRio 2019 – Belated Gratitude and Video!

July 10, 2020

It was a beautiful Fall day on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Wild Rivers Montoso Campground as attendees explored the theme “Universal Elements” for LEAP’s 11th annual outdoor contemporary art celebration. The deep blue autumn sky overhead, sounds of the flowing Rio drifting up through the gorge, and comfortably cooler temperatures made it extra special. Performances and participatory installations included Cynthia Moku’s contemplative “One Continuous Gesture” community brushstroke performance; Laurianne Fiorentino’s concert exploring elements of the Periodic Table through music; and Sarah Parker’s fun collaborative, illustrated Periodic Table of Elements fabric installation. A bountiful locally sourced feast was prepared and served on site for all by Questa Farmers Market team led by Gaea McGahee and many volunteers, accompanied by soulful tunes from Justin Dean and Mark Dudrow. The evening culminated with artist talks at dusk with hot chocolate and Flavio’s famous biscochitos. We had a more intimate crowd this year with approximately one third of folks joining us from within a 20-mile radius, and the other two-thirds from the Taos area and further afield New Mexico towns, cities, and surrounding states.

Thank you to all who helped make NeoRio possible this year – artists, musicians, collaborators, volunteers, donors and sponsors. A deep thank you to the many dedicated individuals for their time and labor given to make the event a success!

And last, but certainly not least, thank you to everyone who came to experience and participate in the the event! Your presence and participation provided the alchemy that made it a success. We would love to hear what you thought of the event! We are always interested in suggestions, photos and feedback: emailforleap@gmail.com or call Claire 575-224-9066.

Every NeoRio event is a unique collaboration of artists, collaborators, organizations, businesses and our host, the Bureau of Land Management Taos Field Office. NeoRio 2018 Gratitude!

October 2, 2018

It was beautiful weather on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 at Montoso Campground at Wild Rivers as over 250 people arrived to explore the theme “Roots ~ Raices” at LEAP’s 10th anniversary outdoor contemporary art celebration.

A wonderful way to celebrate 10 years of experimental art on the rim of the gorge!

NeoRio from LEAP on Vimeo.

Art installations included a “wall” of rooted willows by Scott Sutton, innovative backpack kits for “short adventures in place” by Kacie Smith, interactive installations by UNM Land Arts of the American West artist group (a selection of which also comprised our poets this year), root words flapping in the breeze by Martha Shepp and earth-penetrating optical illusions by Nicholette Codding.

Hands-on activities were for all ages, notably a booth created by Olga Gresott and company in homage to the lowly beet as well as fun art activities provided by Joan Eilers.

Participants were captivated by impassioned young poets at the afternoon Poetry & Music Salon, a bountiful locally sourced (and served) feast, soulful tunes, and informative artist talks at dusk. Featured local musicians were Mad Cat Jack Lorang, Mark Dudrow and Kate Mann. The local feast featured Questa Farmers Market produce and cooks, plus many young volunteer UNM students who helped chop mountains of veggies.

Approximately one third of NeoRio visitors this year hailed from within a 20-mile radius, and the other two-thirds were from further afield New Mexico towns and cities and surrounding states. NeoRio draws a wide array of participants, diverse in age, interests and cultural backgrounds.

And perhaps most significantly, all 250 of us shared the majesty of the place together, through the changing light of the afternoon and evening, the explorations of the artworks and the ways that they enabled us to see the place a little differently or feel it a bit more deeply. Closing the evening with interesting artist talks, Gaea’s perfectly sweet Meixcan hot chocolate and Flavio Cisneros’s melt-in-your-mouth biscochitos by fire and star light was pretty special too.

Thank you to all who helped make NeoRio possible this year – artists, musicians, collaborators, volunteers, donors and sponsors. A deep thank you to the many dedicated individuals for their time and labor given to make the event a success!

Huge thanks go specifically to:
Featured artists Scott Sutton, Kacie Smith and UNM Land Arts Group for sharing their work at the event and for offering their artist talks. Although we offer NeoRio featured artists a small stipend to cover supplies and travel, much of their valuable time and expertise are donated. Also to contributing artist Geraint Smith, who donated to LEAP the beautiful “Milkweed Pods” that were on display and raffled off to three lucky winners.

Without this kind of generosity the past nine NeoRio events would not have been possible.

Huge thanks to the NeoRio Team:

  • Sarah Dzieweczynski for event logistics expertise and MCing!
  • Martha Shepp for much event logistics and graphic design support!
  • Chris Coté for endless moral and logistical support, set-up and take down and providing fire wood for the campfire and shlepping equipment to and from Wild Rivers.
  • Timothy and Connie Long for providing tents for the event, childcare and helping with set-up and clean-up, down to the last details and beyond!
  • Gaea McGahee, NeoRio Food Maven, for graceful and delicious food coordination and preparation.
  • Olga Gressot and crew for Beet Art tent and Joan Eilers for her “prehistoric painting” tent!
  • Sarah Parker for representing Questa Stories at the event!
  • Questa Farmers Market Cooks Wendy and Alex Medina as well as community cooks, Ethan Jackson, Jeannie Masters, Kate Cisneros, Flavio Cisneros, and Dawn Provencher for their delicious food!
  • UNM Land Arts and Art & Biodiversity classes for volunteering help with feast prep and lots of other support.
  • Joan Long for cooking delicious lunches for our NeoRio volunteers as well as logistical support.
  • Ed and Lynn Galusky for great help at the event.
  • Steve Bishop, Peggy Trigg, Joan Eilers and Aimee Deans for much help with tents!

  • PPC Solar for generously providing solar electricity to power the event.
  • Nicholette Codding and Loralee Mattison for photographing the event.
  • Musicians, Kate Mann, Mark Dudrow, and Mad Cat Jack Lorang for providing wonderful tunes for the evening.
  • Many thanks to the Sunday Morning clean-up crew including Joan Eilers, Aimee Deans, Chris Cote, Tim and Connie Long.

Special thanks to our funders: This project was supported in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts. Special thanks also to grants from MAE Foundation, Taos County, Questa Economic Development Fund, Chevron Questa Mine Grants for Good, and sponsorships from PPC Solar, Zia Event Design, North Star Toys, Taos News, Beyond Taos, Rio Grande Ace Hardware, Questa Farmers Market, Cid’s Market, Common Fire, Cerro Vista Farm, and others. It takes “a village” to make this annual event happen!

And last, but certainly not least, thank you to everyone who came to experience and participate in the the event! Your presence and participation provided the alchemy that made it a success. Let’s do it again next year!
